Autism Cures & Treatments

At this time, there is no cure for autism. There are several treatments available to help those with autism become more functional. Treatments are chosen based on the individual needs of the person with autism.
  1. Occupational Therapy

    • An occupational therapist will work with an autistic individual to improve and develop the skills needed to lead a more independent life. These will include activities like tooth brushing, getting dressed, coping skills, perception and social skills.

    Speech Therapy

    • A speech therapist will focus on communication skills. This can include sign language, pictures, typing, improving articulation or the use of electronic communication devices.

    Behavior Therapy

    • A behavioral therapist will work toward determining the reason that certain behaviors are exhibited, and develop a plan of action to assist in changing these behaviors. Hitting, screaming, kicking, flapping and running away are examples of some of these behaviors.

    Nutritional Therapy

    • A nutritional therapist will develop a nutritional plan for the individual with autism. This can include diets that are gluten or casein free.

    Considerations

    • Treating autism is not an exact science. What works for one individual may not work for another.
