Back Brace Instructions

Some people need a back brace to minimize chronic lower back pain or to help with pain during pregnancy. Back surgery patients are often required to wear a brace after surgery to expedite healing. You should always follow your physician's instructions for using a back brace, but if you are not under the care of a physician, you should consider certain guidelines to help support your back during the healing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that you know how to put on your brace properly. Ask a nurse to go over the directions with you until you are confident you can do it alone. If you purchased the brace on your own, ask an expert at the store, if one is available, about proper usage.

    • 2

Wear your brace as many hours during the day as possible and while you sleep. If you have a brace that can be worn in the shower, don't hesitate to walk right into the shower wearing it. You can dry it as you towel off your body. If the brace is not shower-proof, wash and deodorize it with mild soap and a damp cloth.

    • 3

Take extra care while walking. Depending on your back brace, your movement may be somewhat restricted, or you may not be able to see your feet easily, so step slowly and carefully. You should walk only on flat surfaces. Consult your doctor for a protocol if your home has stairs.

    • 4

Avoid vigorous activity and heavy lifting. Do not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk unless your doctor indicates you should not lift more than a certain weight or not lift anything at all.

    • 5

Rest frequently to encourage your body's healing. The best medicine for healing is adequate rest and a good night's sleep.

    • 6

Do not travel in a car for long periods of time if you've recently had back surgery, other than to your doctor's appointments. Sitting up straight for a long time is stressful on the back after surgery. If you did have surgery, you are typically not allowed to drive until your physician states that you may.
