What are the Causes of Backpain?
-
Genetic Causes
-
Forms of arthritis, stenosis or the narrowing of the spinal column, and scoliosis or a curved spine, can all cause back pain but may not be noticeable until middle age. Discs between the vertebrae may flatten with age, making the back less flexible. Race also plays a factor in back pain. According to the National Institutes of Health, black women are up to three times as likely to have the lower part of the spine slip out of place.
Stress and Strain
-
Sitting on your wallet, carrying a purse on the same shoulder each day, sleeping in a strange position, all can cause muscle tension and back pain. Herniated or ruptured discs can occur with regular wear and tear or from an accident or injury. Lifting heavy items improperly can cause acute back pain. Every day stress can cause back muscles to tighten and spasm.
Prevention and Treatment
-
Some types of back pain can be avoided with a good diet, regular exercise to tone back muscles and stretching to increase flexibility. Being overweight automatically puts more strain on your spine and back muscles, and increases the likelihood of back injury. Sitting with poor posture places stress on the back that can be avoided. Lifting heavy items improperly can cause acute back pain. Smoking can prevent your spinal discs from getting sufficient nutrition, meaning back pain may linger. For acute discomfort, acetaminophen or ibuprofen and hot and cold compresses can ease pain. Chronic pain may require steroid injections or in some cases, surgery.
