Spine Care and Mattresses
The importance of an appropriate mattress becomes apparent when you consider that the average person spends approximately one third of his life sleeping on one. Mattresses that do not provide proper support can cause chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Selecting the correct mattress can alleviate pain and improve sleep quality.-
Function
-
Mattresses, in conjunction with box springs, work to support the body during sleep. According to Dr. Eric Chludzinski of the Hudson Center for Spinal Care, a proper mattress supports the body's natural contours, thereby relieving pressure on the spinal cord, joints and nerves.
Types
-
No one mattress type suits every person. Spring mattresses are the most common type but, according to Dr. Chludzinski, offer insufficient support for individuals who suffer with chronic back pain. Pocket-sprung mattresses, those containing springs enclosed in fabric pockets, allow individualized support and are ideal for sleepers who differ in weight and size. Memory foam mattresses mold to a person's body shape and provide superior support and comfort.
Considerations
-
Exceptionally firm mattresses are not necessarily better for the spine. According to the Chinese Community Health Resource Center, although a firm mattress does support the entire spine, one that is too hard can cause back pain. People with back problems should also consider mattress systems that do not require seasonal turning as part of their maintenance.
