What is a back blow?

Definition:

A back blow is a technique used to dislodge a foreign object that is obstructing the airway of a choking person. It is performed by striking the person firmly between the shoulder blades. The force of the blow can help to expel the object from the airway, allowing the person to breathe again.

Steps to perform a back blow:

- Ensure the person is choking: This can be determined by observing signs such as difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, or a high-pitched sound when inhaling.

- Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist: Lean them forward slightly over your own body.

- Deliver 5 quick, forceful blows between the person's shoulder blades: Use the heel of one hand and aim for the area just below the neck.

- Evaluate the person's condition and repeat the back blows if necessary: If the object is not expelled, continue delivering back blows until it is dislodged or the person becomes unconscious.

If the choking person becomes unconscious, it is important to immediately start CPR.
