How do you treat a thrown out back?
Initial treatment:
* Rest: Avoid activities that put strain on your back.
* Ice: Apply ice to your back for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours.
* Compression: Wear a back brace or wrap to support your back.
* Elevation: Lie down with your feet elevated above your heart.
* Over-the-counter pain relievers: Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce pain.
After a few days, you can begin to gradually increase your activity level.
* Start by walking for short periods of time.
* Gradually increase the duration and intensity of your activity as tolerated.
* Avoid activities that cause pain.
You may also benefit from physical therapy.
* A physical therapist can teach you exercises to strengthen your back and improve your flexibility.
Most cases of a thrown out back will resolve with self-care and physical therapy within a few weeks.
If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, see your doctor.
* You may need further evaluation, such as an MRI, to determine the cause of your pain.
* In some cases, surgery may be necessary.
