Fell and hit back of head?
Seek medical attention immediately if you have fallen and hit the back of your head.
A head injury can be serious, even if you don't lose consciousness. Some head injuries can cause bleeding or swelling in the brain, which can lead to permanent damage or even death.
Symptoms of a head injury can include:
Mild Symptoms:
* Headache
* Nausea or vomiting
* Dizziness or confusion
* Blurry vision
* Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
* Sensitivity to light or noise
* Difficulty concentrating or remembering
More Serious Symptoms:
* Loss of consciousness, even for a brief moment
* Seizures
* Slurred speech
* Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
* Difficulty walking or balancing
* Vomiting that doesn't stop
* Increasing confusion or drowsiness
* Unusual behavior
If you experience any of these symptoms, go to the emergency room or call 911 immediately.
The doctor will assess your symptoms and order tests, such as a CT scan or MRI, to determine the extent of your head injury. Treatment will depend on the severity of your injury.
To prevent a head injury:
* Wear a helmet when participating in sports or activities that could put you at risk for a fall.
* Be aware of your surroundings and avoid situations where you could fall.
* If you do fall, try to protect your head with your hands or arms.
