How To Correct for Too Much Lumbar Support

The lower spine, or lumbar region, bears most of the weight of the human body. It is one of the most common spots for back pain, often as a result of poor posture or inadequate seating. When the lumbar region becomes weak, it can lead to slouching and overextending of muscles in the back. Lumbar support is popular in many vehicles and office chairs as a way to prevent these problems, but too much lumbar support can be just as uncomfortable as not enough.

Instructions

  1. Adjusting lumbar support

    • 1

Adjust the support in vehicles that feature customizable seating. Many vehicles have a button panel that control angle of recline, lumbar and shoulder support. Look for a "Lumbar" control that can allow you to adjust the amount of support in your chair. These button panels are usually located on the side of the chair seat, or near the power window controls. Automated lumbar supports come in various forms. Some use a mechanical balloon to inflate and deflate to the proper settings. Other systems use a physical tube that is pushed back and forward within the chair. Try to turn the lumbar support completely off to see if it corrects the problem.

Change your posture or seating position. Examine how you naturally sit. People who slouch or who sit on the edge of their seat could be pushing their lumbar regions against the natural supports of the chair. Straighten your posture or sit further back in your chair to see if it corrects some of the issue.

Use a back or neck pillow to counter-balance the lumbar support. Using back or neck pillows to help reposition your back can take a lot of pressure off of your lumbar region. Experiment with different placement options near the shoulders, neck and middle of the back.
