Why Does My New Mattress Give Me a Backache?

Your mattress can be the culprit causing your back pain. A poorly chosen mattress can also worsen existing back pain. You can help alleviate back pain by choosing a different mattress.
  1. Number of Coils

    • Your new mattress may have an inappropriate number of coils, which can cause back pain. Too many coils means the mattress is too firm, which can put pressure on the pressure points in the back. Too few coils means the mattress is too soft, and doesn't provide enough support.

    Padding

    • Many newer mattresses come with a mattress topper that is supposed to provide more comfort to the sleeper. Mattress pads can actually make the mattress softer, which can lessen much needed support for back pain sufferers.

    Improper Foundation

    • The foundation of the mattress is also known as the box-spring. The box-spring supports the weight of the mattress and absorbs stress; without it, the mattress may not support the sleeper properly.

    Mattress Type

    • Mattresses come in a variety of forms, including water beds, foam, and innerspring. If your new mattress causes back pain, it may not be the best mattress type for you.

    Sleeping Partner

    • Not every sleeper needs the same type or firmness of mattress. If your sleeping partner finds the new mattress uncomfortable, they may toss and turn at night, causing sleeplessness for you. You may wake up achy due to the lack of sleep you get in the night.
