Scoliosis Pain Treatment

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by a sideways spine curvature. Scoliosis severity varies widely and in some cases the extreme curvature can cause back pain. According to the University of Washington, scoliosis usually does not cause back pain in adolescents, but may lead to back pain when they become adults.
  1. Effects

    • Symptoms of scoliosis include uneven hips, waist and shoulders. Severe spine curvatures can cause breathing difficulties and back pain.

    Therapies

    • Physical therapy can help reduce back pain associated with scoliosis by strengthening the back muscles. Physical therapy may include exercise, ultrasound and hot or cold compresses.

    Alternative Treatments

    • While the Mayo Clinic indicates that studies do not support the effectiveness of chiropractic care and electrical stimulation, many use these treatments to treat back pain associated with scoliosis.

    Over-the-counter medications

    • Treatments for mild to moderate back pain primarily consist of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.

    Prescription Medications

    • More severe back pain may require prescription medications including narcotic pain medications, muscle relaxers and antidepressant medications. The University of Washington advises that narcotics be used sparingly or not at all because of the risk of dependency.

    Injections

    • Injections of medications such as cortisone or botox have also proved to relieve back pain temporarily.
