Can Hyalgan Be Used for Spinal Stenosis?

Osteoarthritis is a common cause of spinal stenosis where parts of the spinal column narrow due to degeneration and compression. Hyalgan is a drug that has been used to treat severe osteoarthritis affecting the knee with many patients wondering if it can alleviate back pain.

  1. Hyalgen Definition

    • Hyalgan is a liquid injected into the knee to replace naturally occurring hyaluronate fluid. This fluid lubricates and cushions the knee.

    Application

    • Hyalgan is prescribed by doctors when pain medication and physical therapy have not yielded the desired pain relief. Patients may get a series of up to five injections one week apart.

    Duration

    • The effects of Hyalgan in pain reduction are similar to cortisone injections. Many patients may experience relief for up to six months.

    Risks

    • Those with allergies to egg products or bird feathers should not take Hyalgan. The long-term effects of this drug are not yet known. Side effects include swelling, pain and bruising in the injection area.

    Stenosis Application

    • The application of Hyalgan in spinal stenosis has yet to be studied. The spine does not contain hyaluronate fluid, therefore not making this a top priority in research studies.
