Signs & Symptoms of Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease

Cervical disc degeneration is a condition that occurs when the discs in the neck become dehydrated and smaller. This decreases the the cushioning ability of the discs. This condition often result in neck pain and stiffness.

    • According to Spine Health, cervical disc degeneration is less common than lumbar disc degeneration.

    Cause

    • Cervical disc degeneration may occur as the result of an injury or fall, or may occur over time due to normal wear and tear of the discs.

    Symptoms

    • Cervical disc degeneration may cause the neck to feel stiff and slightly painful. If nerves in the cervical area become pinched, symptoms may include tingling, weakness and numbness in the neck, shoulders or arms.

    Identification

    • Cervical disc degeneration can be identified by a physician using a combination of a physical exam, X-rays, CT scans and MRIs.

    Treatment

    • Initially, pain medications and hot or cold compresses may be used to treat cervical disc degeneration. Exercise may help as well. Consult a physician about exercise techniques that should be used. In severe cases, the cervical discs may need be to fused during surgery.
