1
Take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium. Choose the medication that has worked best to relieve your pain in the past. In general, avoid ibuprofen if you have an upset stomach or ulcer, as ibuprofen can be harsh to the stomach. Ensure that the directions on the bottle are followed and that medications with contraindications are not taken.

2
Receive a massage. Often, tight muscles due to sleeping in a bizarre position on a feather mattress can result in back pain that's adequately relieved with a massage.
-
3
Soak in a warm bathtub with Epsom salt for 20 minutes. Epsom salt can assist the body in relieving inflammation and muscle pain.
-
4
Rest with a heating pad placed over the painful part of the back for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the heating pad for at least 20 minutes before replacing it. The heat will help to ease the muscle pain and improve circulation.

5
Stretch slowly to loosen the painful muscles of the back and promote circulation. Yoga and tai chi are excellent choices for slow, healthful stretching.
