How to Stop Exhaustion in Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease related to arthritis. The spine, sacroiliac and hip joints become stiff and inflamed, and in some cases, can lead to bone fusion at these points. For people living with ankylosing spondylitis, fatigue can be a major problem. It can be caused by a loss of sleep, due to discomfort, but can also be a symptom of the disease itself. Fortunately, there are relatively simple ways you can combat exhaustion and feel more rested.Instructions

1
Review your medications. Long-acting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen, indomethacin, naproxen, etc.) taken at night may get you a sound night's sleep and even reduce morning aches. Some patients with chronic inflammatory diseases may benefit from low-dose antidepressants, which can interrupt the pain cycle and help them sleep better.

Have your doctor check to see if you are anemic. Anemia is a common symptom of chronic inflammatory diseases and can contribute to fatigue. Treating low iron levels can help give you more energy.

3
Get moving. Exercise can help build muscle mass, and increase energy levels. Exercise generates endorphins, which are brain chemicals that produce a sense of well-being and more energy. Sleep experts recommend exercising at least three hours before bedtime, and the best time is usually late afternoon.

Getting into a comfortable sleeping position is a challenge when joints are swollen and sore. Make sure you are sleeping on a firm, but not hard, bed. This will help you maintain a good, non-bent resting posture. Avoid using a pillow, if possible, to prevent pain from over-extension of the neck and spine.

5
Relax. Try to ensure that when you go to bed, you aren't still thinking about other things. Relaxation training, which often involves reducing tension and muscular relaxation techniques, may help.

If you still have problems with getting a restful night's sleep, talk to your rheumatologist about the possibility of using prescription sleep aids. There are many options that your doctor may be able to recommend that will help you overcome your daytime exhaustion.
