Diffuse Cervical Generative Disc Disease
Cervical degenerative disc disease is a common cause of neck pain. Although it is less common than lumbar spine disc degeneration, the condition can brought on by a neck injury or accumulated wear and tear on the neck vertebrae.-
Significance
-
Cervical degenerative disc disease usually manifests as neck pain or a stiff neck. It can also induce numbness or tingling in the neck, shoulders, arms and hands.
Function
-
When a disc, the cushion between the vertebrae, degenerates, less space exists between the bones. Pain and numbness can result from nerves becoming trapped or rubbing against the bones.
Features
-
Your doctor will either use an MRI, CT scan or X-ray to determine if you have cervical degenerative disc disease. These tests will show if there is actual degeneration or if another condition like arthritis is causing the problems.
Prevention/Solution
-
Most often, conservative treatment such as rest, hot and cold compresses, exercise, physical therapy and taking over-the-counter painkillers is enough to reduce pain.
Warning
-
In severe cases, surgery may be necessary if symptoms don't resolve after six months of home care. Surgery involves the fusing of the vertebrae to prevent rubbing and other irritation.
