Signs and Symptoms of Right Lower Abdominal Pain

The classic symptoms of abdominal pain are a burning sensation, a dull ache and a sharp or stabbing pain. Abdominal pain can be caused by your gallbladder, appendix, pancreas, intestines or kidneys.

Appendicitis

• Appendicitis is characterized by severe, lower-right abdominal pain. It might start as a mild, uncomfortable feeling around the naval. Slight fever, vomiting and nausea may occur. If you experience symptoms of appendicitis, go to the emergency room immediately.

Bowel Cancer

• Lower-right abdominal pain can occur with bowel cancer. However, it is not common. When lower-right abdominal pain does occur, it is more likely to be experienced in the elderly patient that is experiencing weight loss, change in bowel habit, and a loss of appetite. If changes in bowel movement occur, consult your physician.

Ectopic Pregnancy

• Ectopic pregnancy symptoms include a sudden onset of extreme pain in the lower-right or lower-left abdomen. Vomiting and fever usually are not experienced. Call your physician for emergency advice. If you have bleeding or severe abdominal pain, go to the emergency room, or call 911.

Constipation

• Constipation often causes lower-right abdominal pain. Signs of constipation include not opening your bowel as often as normal and/or the quantity of the stool passed has decreased. Consult your doctor to eliminate any underlying cause.

Crohn's Disease

• Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. Symptoms include lower-right abdominal pain. The exact cause of Crohn's disease is unknown, but it is a disorder in the immune system. Other symptoms include skin changes, eye problems, liver problems and dysfunction in the thyroid gland,

Diverticulitis

• Diverticulitis primarily affects the elderly. Nagging pain in the abdomen occurs 99 percent of the times on the left side. Although rare on the right side, diverticulitis can occur on the right side as well. .
