Information on Lower Back Surgery
Lower back surgery may be necessary for patients who do not respond to other forms of treatment. There are several different types of lower back surgery that may help to relieve pain.-
Identification
-
Surgery is most commonly performed on the lower back if there is a musculoskeletal injury or chronic back pain. Non-surgical treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications, strengthening the lower back and prevention of further injury. If these methods are not successful, then lower back surgery may be performed.
Discectomy
-
A discectomy may be performed to relieve pressure from the nerve root or a bone spur. During this procedure, the doctor removes a small piece of the disc and removes the obstruction.
Spinal Fusion
-
A spinal fusion may be performed to limit movement of the back and reduce pain. This procedure involves removing discs between the vertebrae and "fusing" the vertebrae. The surgeon installs metal screws or "hardware" that helps hold the fusion.
Laminectomy
-
A lumbar laminectomy may be performed to increase the size of the spinal canal and reduce the pressure on nerve roots and the spinal cord. This is also called spinal decompression.
Considerations
-
Every surgery has risks involved. Talk with your doctor prior to your lower back surgery about these risks. These risks may include problems with anesthesia, failed back surgery or increased pain.
