How to Use Mineral Ice on a Herniated Disc

Herniated disc, also referred to as ruptured, bulging or, incorrectly, slipped disc, is an injury of the vertebrae that causes a great deal of pain when pressed against a nerve to cause inflammation and swelling. Mineral Ice (brand manufactured by Bristol-Myers), with menthol as its active ingredient, is one way to provide relief for this pain. This cool, blue gel is formulated to dry quickly, without greasiness or lingering odor, and can be applied directly to the herniated disc.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Get someone to help you apply the mineral ice if you cannot reach the area yourself.

    • 2

Clean the skin of the disc area with soap and water and dry it off.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of the mineral ice directly on the problem disc. Even if the pain has expanded to other areas, apply it only on this area to get to the source of the pain. You can apply it directly with your hands or with wet/dry bandages or ice packs.

    • 4

Leave the mineral ice on the area for 15 minutes at the most.

    • 5

Remove the ice with a cloth or paper towel.
