Thoracic Bulging Disc Treatment

A thoracic disc bulge---also called a thoracic herniated disc---occurs in the mid to upper region of the back when the jelly-like substance within a disc begins to protrude from the layers of connective tissue around the disc. A thoracic disc bulge can be caused by any number of prolonged activities and can be quite uncomfortable. Thoracic disc bulges are treated through a series of physiotherapies that promote the movement of the bulging disc back to its original position.
  1. Thoracic Disc Bulge Symptoms

    • Thoracic disc bulge symptoms are caused by repetitive activities such as slouching as well as activities which require you to hold your arms out ahead of you such as when driving.

Because of the lack of nerve roots in the mid back that supply the arms and legs, thoracic disc bulge symptoms are localized to the back and side of the body where the root of the problem lies. While localized, the discomfort can be moderate to acute and radiate around to the chest wall. In some cases the disc bulge may put pressure on the spine itself which can cause weakness or pain in the hips and legs.

    Thoracic Disc Bulge Treatment

    • If you have any of the thoracic disc bulge symptoms you should see your doctor to attain a deeper determination of your condition. If your doctor suspects a thoracic disc bulge, they may prescribe an MRI scan of the entire spine to clearly see where the problem points are.

Once a thoracic disc bulge is confirmed then the thoracic disc bulge treatment can begin. Your doctor will likely try to stop the inflammation and pain immediately with cortisone steroid injections in the region where the disc bulge occurs. In addition, they may recommend over the counter anti-inflammatory medicine such as Aleve or something stronger depending on your amount of pain. Apply an ice pack the affected area for 20 minute intervals every four to six hours as needed to help reduce swelling and pain.

Ask your doctor about seeing a physical therapist that can help you with stretches and exercises that will relieve pressure on the thoracic disc bulge and lessen your overall discomfort. Rest for several days to ensure your thoracic disc bulge treatment has time to work and so you do not aggravate the inflamed area.

If these treatments do not work you may have the option of surgery. Microdecompressive endoscopic thoracic discectomy with a laser is one type of surgery used to fix a thoracic disc bulge. Microdecompressive endoscopic thoracic discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to cut away a portion of the offending disc thus lessening the pressure on the surrounding nerves.

Take a conservative approach and discuss any and all thoracic disc bulge treatment options with your doctor.
