What Are the Causes of Back Pain & Tingling in Hands & Feet?

At least 90 percent of all American adults will have back pain at some time in their lives, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Most people who suffer from back pain are able to return to work within a few months.
  1. Types

    • The types of conditions that cause back pain with tingling in your hands and feet include back injuries and diseases, pelvic injuries or tumors.

    Causes

    • Back pain may be caused by nerve compression, when lifting heavy objects, or as a result of car accidents or sports injuries. Aging or illness---such as degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis or arthritis---can also cause back pain.

    Diagnosis

    • Your doctor will assess your range of motion and pain tolerance during a physical exam, and ask questions to determine if you were injured or if your pain is from a disease or compressed nerve. X-rays or an MRI may be ordered.

    Solution

    • Exercise and stretch your back muscles daily, and use safe lifting practices. If you have a desk job, get up and move around often, and make sure your chair provides proper support.

    Treatment

    • According to the AAFP, treatments for back pain and tingling usually include anti-inflammatory painkillers and rest. Your doctor may also recommend physical therapy, spinal adjustments, steroid injections, muscle relaxants or surgery.
