Probiotics & Back Pain
Probiotics are neither a direct cause of nor treatment for back pain. However, the healthy bacteria in probiotic products may strengthen immunity and regulate digestive health, potentially preventing conditions that can lead to back pain.-
Definition
-
According to Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael Picco, M.D., probiotics are defined as supplements or foods containing beneficial bacteria that function like those normally found in the body and counteract the effects of dangerous bacteria.
Conditions
-
Probiotics may have a positive influence on certain causes of lower back pain, including infection, obesity, pregnancy, constipation and other gastrointestinal issues.
Prevention/Solution
-
Consistent use of probiotics improves overall digestive health, preventing low back pain associated with constipation, as well as gas, bloating and bad breath (symptoms of unchecked bad bacteria). The good bacteria in probiotics may also promote a stronger immune system overall, according to leading probiotics researcher Gary Huffnagle, Ph.D. of the University of Michigan Health System.
Sources
-
Simple dietary sources of probiotics include miso, yogurt and fermented milk. Supplements containing the common probiotic strains lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are also available at most pharmacies and health food stores.
Warning
-
As stated above, probiotics are not a treatment for back pain. While there are no known disadvantages and many potential benefits to taking probiotics, they are not meant to substitute for a correct diagnosis and treatment of a condition. Consult a doctor or chiropractor if you are suffering from consistent back pain.
