Chronic Lower Back Problems

Pain is considered chronic if it lasts for longer than three months. Chronic lower back pain is a common neurological ailment that can be caused by one or more lower back conditions.
  1. Intervertebral Discs

    • The intervertebral discs are continually under pressure. This can lead to a herniated disc that bulges into the spinal area and causes pain.

    Sciatica

    • Sciatica is a condition that occurs when a disc protrudes, causing it to press on the sciatic nerve. This can cause burning and shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks and down the leg.

    Osteoporosis

    • Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes the bones to become weak and brittle. This can lead to the bones splintering and causing chronic lower back problems.

    Fibromyalgia

    • Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and tender spots in the neck, spine, hips and shoulders.

    Spondylitis

    • Spondylitis is an infection or inflammation in the spinal joints that leads to chronic back pain and stiffness.

    Considerations

    • Exercise and using proper techniques to lift heavy objects can reduce the risk of chronic lower back problems.
