Cervical Stenosis Information
Cervical stenosis is typically found in individuals over the age of 50. It is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck area of the spine. Individuals can be born with this type of narrowing; however, in many cases spinal stenosis is due to trauma of the neck.-
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of cervical stenosis may include neck pain, numbness of the shoulder, weakness, tingling in the arms, legs or hands and in rare cases paralysis.
Diagnosis
-
Diagnosis of cervical stenosis can be determined through imaging technology such as an MRI or a CAT scan of the neck.
Non-surgical treatment
-
Treatment of cervical stenosis may include non-surgical methods such as anti-inflammatory drugs, restricted activity and, in some cases, wearing a neck brace for a period of time may alleviate symptoms associated with cervical stenosis.
Surgical treatment
-
In some cases surgical treatment may be required. A laminotomy may be preformed to remove the material that may be pressing against the nerves.
Prognosis
-
Cervical stenosis is a progressive disease and can lead to disability if untreated.
