Lower Spine Pinched Nerve Symptoms

A pinched nerve in the lower spine is caused by a weakened or torn disc that presses on the nerve, resulting in symptoms in the lower legs (below the knee) and/or the feet.
  1. Pain

    • You may experience a burning or sharp pain that may extend into your lower legs and feet, and the pain can become worse when coughing or sneezing.

    Numbness

    • Your lower legs or feet may become numb or you may have a decrease in sensation in them from a pinched nerve in the lower spine.

    Tingling

    • You may feel a "pins and needles" tingling sensation in your lower legs or feet from the pinched nerve.

    Muscle Weakness/Twitching

    • A lower-spine pinched nerve also can result in muscle weakness in your lower legs or feet, depending on which disc is involved. You may also experience muscle twitching.

    Considerations

    • Your symptoms may be worse when you are sleeping. If symptoms persist for more than a few days you should see your physician.
