Bulging Disc Relief
Back pain and problems can occur through injuries or tightness in the musculature of the back, which can cause the spinal discs to move out of the vertebral space. This is called a bulging disc. This protrusion of the disc may result in pain and dysfunction.-
Disc Structure and Function
-
A spinal disc is located between the vertebral bones and acts as both a joint for movement and a stabilizer for the spine. The disc also acts as a shock absorber for physical activity and prevents the vertebral bones from making contact. It is a gelatinous structure, called the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a fibrous covering referred to as the annulus fibrosus.
Disc Dysfunction
-
Disc dysfunction can occur because of injury, prolonged stress or aging. A disc herniation is when the disc material leaks out of the vertebral space. A contained herniation, referred to as a bulging disc, is when the gelatinous material protrudes but stays within the confines of the annulus pulposus. A true herniated or ruptured disc occurs when the gelatinous material tears through the annulus fibrosus and leaks out.
Bulging Disc Symptoms
-
Symptoms often depend on the location and extend of the bulge. A protrusion that presses on or irritates a nerve, for example, may result in radiating pain into another area, not in the disc space. If the bulging disc is accompanied by degeneration of the disc, the pain can be experienced in the disc space as well. Symptoms common with a bulging disc often include shooting pain, numbness and tingling, inflammation or swelling of the area and pain with movement. A general limitation of movement can also occur.
Acute Bulging Disc Relief
-
Acute pain from a bulging disc, or pain with a sudden onset and short duration, typically responds to a conservative treatment program. This includes anti-inflammatory medications and ice to decrease swelling that may be causing pain symptoms, and a short rest period. Analgesics and pain-relieving modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation provided by a qualified physical therapist may help relieve discomfort.
Chronic Bulging Disc Relief
-
Chronic bulging disc relief is a treatment regimen to alleviate pain and symptoms that become long-term. Heat or ice application and pain-relieving modalities may ease discomfort. During the chronic phase, it is important to institute a regular exercise program to include strengthening of the back and abdominal muscles. Methods such as traction, lying on the belly and proper body mechanics may help coax the disc protrusion back into place. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the protrusion or fix the disc space.
