Causes of Pelvic & Back Pain

The U.S. National Library of Medicine says that lower back pain occurs because of the structure of the spine, muscles and nerves in that area of the body. When the back and spine becomes injured, pain radiates to other areas of the body, particularly the pelvis and the lower body. Injuries to the lower back increase the pressure placed on the pelvis, especially when nerve damage occurs in this area of the body. Medical conditions that cause pelvic and back pain range from temporary injuries to serious medical problems.
  1. Herniated Disk

    • Herniated disks cause pelvic and back pain in the lumbar region of the spine. The disk, located between the ribs and hips, cushions the bones in the spines. The American Academy of Family Physicians states that a hernia caused by a rupture or bulge in spinal disks leads to nerve damage that results in pain in the pelvis and back.

    Pinched Nerves

    • The AGS Foundation for Health in Aging describes a pinched nerve as pressure on nerve roots that causes pelvic and back pain. Bony growths pressing against the nerves of the spinal column cause pinched nerves. People experience pain, tingling feelings and weakness in the back, neck and pelvis.

    Sciatica

    • Sciatica causes sharp, isolated pains in the pelvis, lower back, legs and buttocks. This causes pelvic and back pain when people stand or walk, or suddenly change position. The damage caused by the sciatic nerve may persist for a few weeks and suddenly go away.

    Pregnancy

    • Pregnancy causes pelvic and back pain because the baby's growth changes a woman's center of gravity. The muscular imbalance caused by the growing baby strains the lower back and pelvis. Pregnant women who experience this pain often feel fatigued and experience muscle weakness. Women who have poor posture feel more pain in these areas of the body.

    Ovarian Cancer

    • The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that one of the symptoms of ovarian cancer is pelvic and back pain. The back pain worsens over time, and women feel a sense of heaviness in the pelvic area. Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in women.

    Bladder Infections

    • Bladder infections cause pelvic and back pain, because inflammation and infections develop in the urinary tract. This pain leads to pressure in the lower back and pelvic area, and a urge to urinate.
