How to Make Warm Instant Ice
Making warm ice is a fun project to teach basic chemistry or to create a project such as an ice sculpture. - Hand warmers made with sodium acetate
- Large metal pan or pot
- Scissors
- Wooden spoon
- Large, glass measuring cup

Buy several sodium acetate hand warmers at a hardware store, home supply warehouse or sporting goods store.

Heat 3 cups water to almost boiling in a large pan or pot over medium heat.

Cut open your hand warmers to gain access to the pellets of sodium acetate or or sodium acetate powder inside. Pour the sodium acetate into the water as it slowly boils. Stir the solution until the contents are completely dissolved.

Pour the solution into a large, glass measuring cup.

Place the measuring cup in the refrigerator to cool for 30 to 45 minutes. Pour the solution into a large pan or pot to create warm ice. Mold and carve by hand as desired.
