What is the swan flu?

The H5N1 avian influenza is commonly known as the bird flu or swan flu. It is a type of influenza A virus that can cause severe respiratory illness in humans and animals. The virus was first identified in 1997 in Hong Kong in domestic geese. Since then, it has spread to other parts of the world and has caused outbreaks in both wild and domestic birds. In rare cases, the H5N1 virus has also been known to infect humans, causing severe illness and even death.

Symptoms of the H5N1 virus in humans can include:

* Fever

* Cough

* Sore throat

* Muscle aches

* Headache

* Diarrhea

* Vomiting

* Difficulty breathing

The virus can also cause severe respiratory illness, including pneumonia, and can be fatal.

There is no specific treatment for the H5N1 virus, and treatment is supportive. Antiviral medications such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) may be effective in treating the virus, but they should be started as early as possible after symptoms develop.

The best way to prevent infection with the H5N1 virus is to avoid contact with infected birds and to practice good hygiene, such as:

* Washing your hands frequently with soap and water

* Avoiding touching your face

* Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze

* Staying home if you are sick
