What does giardia cause?
Giardia duodenalis (also known as Giardia intestinalis or Giardia lamblia) is a protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis. Symptoms of giardiasis can include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Gas
- Bloating
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Headache
- Fatigue
Giardiasis is usually spread by ingesting contaminated water or food. It is also spread through contact with infected people or animals. Symptoms of giardiasis typically develop 1-3 weeks after exposure to the parasite. Giardiasis usually resolves on its own within 2-6 weeks, but it can sometimes become a chronic condition. Treatment for giardiasis includes medications such as metronidazole and tinidazole.
