What Blocks the Absorption of Ferrous Sulfate?

Ferrous sulfate, or FeSO4, is a compound containing iron, sulfur and oxygen. Iron supplements contain ferrous sulfate. In the human body, ferrous sulfate is a source for the iron needed in red blood cells to carry oxygen to the cells of the body. It is vitally important that nothing blocks the absorption of ferrous sulfate, as iron deficiency causes anemia, a condition characterized by fatigue due to a lack of oxygen in the cells.
  1. Tannic Acid

    • Tannic acid is a plant-based substance with many medicinal uses. It inhibits or blocks the absorption of ferrous sulfate in the body and is found in tea and coffee. Avoid both of these beverages a minimum of two hours before or after taking ferrous sulfate, according to WebMD. Take the iron supplement one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal on an empty stomach for best results. Allow 10 minutes after taking the iron supplement to enter the body before lying down.

    Dairy Products

    • Calcium is an essential substance for the body and is found in dairy products. Individuals with calcium deficiencies eat dairy products and take antacid supplements to raise their calcium levels. All these products inhibit the absorption of ferrous sulfate. To address both a calcium and iron deficiency, take the supplements at least two hours apart so the calcium does not cancel out the iron.

    Whole-Grain Products

    • Whole-grain products like cereals contain phytates and fiber that bind with iron, according to Dr. Ronald Huffman, which affects absorption. These whole-grain products, much like calcium, possess many good qualities for a healthy diet. The problem arises for the person with iron deficiency. As with dairy products, don't consume whole-grain products and iron supplements at the same time.

    Other Inhibitors

    • Dr. Huffman identified EDTA, a type of acid used in food additives, and possibly soy as products that inhibit the absorption of iron. He also states that vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron by capturing the iron in its ferrous form. In addition, when taking ferrous sulfate on an empty stomach, also take vitamin C supplements, which will aid in the absorption process and counteract substances that inhibit the process.
