While 92 percent of plasma is water the remaining eight percent is composed of hundreds of proteins and antibodies that assist people living with blood disorders. Plasma is used to control bleeding, fight against infections in the blood and even to treat severe burns.       Check your plasma donor eligibility. You must be 18 to 64 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and have overall good health. You may not have tattoos or piercings obtained in the past 12 months and you cannot be a pregnant or nursing mother.

Provide the donation center with a copy of your immigration card or social security card and photo identification. At this appointment you will meet with a physician to undergo a full physical exam and blood tests.

      Provide your complete medical history to the plasma center and begin the donation process. You may bring a book or music to keep you entertained during your initial appointment, which takes between one and two hours. The machine you are hooked to will separate your plasma from your blood, keeping the plasma and returning the blood to your body. If your blood test results come back with issues, your plasma will not be donated and you will not be eligible to donate again.
