Vein Embolism

Vein embolisms, also called thrombosis, are blood clots which can cause serious damage and even death. Usually found in the legs, they can travel to the heart or lungs, resulting in the highest risk of death.
  1. Causes

    • Vein embolisms can occur for a variety of reasons. One of the main factors, immobility, includes hospitalization, sitting for long periods, surgery, trauma to the lower body and even obesity. Quicker than normal coagulation is an additional factor.

    Treatments

    • Medical personnel address vein embolisms with several types of treatment. Warm compressions and leg compressions can alleviate mild symptoms. For more serious issues, anticoagulants and blood thinners, such as aspirin, help break up clots. The most severe cases may require surgery.

    Prevention

    • Several methods that are easy to use at home will help prevent vein embolisms. Basic good health practices such as keeping weight in check, walking and abstaining from cigarette smoking can reduce the likelihood of vein embolisms. Compression stockings and medication help blood circulation issues.
