Glucose Complications

Levels of glucose in the blood can fluctuate from very high to very low, especially in people whose bodies are not able to control blood sugar effectively. People who have uncontrolled blood glucose over time often have diabetes. Even non-diabetics can have trouble with blood glucose, though. Changes in the body, such as pregnancy or change in weight, can cause glucose levels to rise and fall.
  1. High Glucose

    • When blood glucose is too high, the whole body may have a problem. High glucose is also called hyperglycemia and is 160mg/dl or above for most people, according to Joslin Diabetes Center. If your glucose is high over time, you can have problems with your eyes, kidneys and heart. When your body cannot control glucose levels, a doctor should test you for diabetes.

    Low Glucose

    • Hypoglycemia is a condition in which blood glucose levels are lower than normal. Low glucose levels can cause a variety of symptoms. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse lists hunger, shaking, anxiety, weakness and dizziness among the symptoms. When blood glucose levels fall far below normal, you can pass out or even slip into a coma. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse reports that this typically occurs in people with type 1 diabetes.

    Glucose Problems in Pregnancy

    • Pregnancy can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate. Very high blood sugar during pregnancy can be caused by gestational diabetes. It can cause complications during the pregnancy and birth. Medicine Net reports that high blood sugar during pregnancy can lead to birth defects and miscarriage. It can also cause the baby to be too large. Doctors treat high blood glucose during pregnancy in a variety of ways. It is important for the health of baby and mother for a doctor to be treating the problem.
