Hematology & Blood Chemistry
Examination of blood cells, or hematology, can speak volumes about the health of a person. Each cell has a job to do in the body, and when cells are not working properly they can cause illness and even death.-
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
-
The most routine blood test is the complete blood count. It can reveal infections, anemia, electrolyte imbalance, high blood sugar, dehydration, kidney failure and a host of other complications.
Blood Values
-
A high white count can indicate an infection, and a low red cell count might be a sign of anemia. High glucose levels can mean diabetes. Low hemoglobin counts can trigger the need for a transfusion, while electrolyte values might trigger the need for certain fluid treatment. Other values can reveal organ damage.
Toxicology
-
Toxicology testing investigates dangerous drugs, poisons and toxins. Arsenic, benzene, and carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. Drugs and alcohol levels are important to know for treatment. Maintenance levels are checked periodically for medications such as lithium and dioxin.
Cultures
-
Cultures are taken to examine the blood for bacteria that can cause food poisoning and streptococcus and staphylococcus infections. One of the most common aliments found in blood cultures is meningitis.
Hormones
-
Blood tests for hormone levels include thyroid and adrenal functions. Plasma cortisol is checked for signs of Addison's disease and Cushing's disease.
