What Are the Treatments for Low White Blood Count?
Low-white blood cell count—medically termed neutropenia, can cause a variety of complications including infection. Several treatments options exist and will depend on a variety of factors.-
Determining Treatment

Your doctor will take several factors into account when determining treatment. They include the cause of the neutropenia, presence of infections, severity of the condition, your overall health and specific symptoms.
Fighting Infection

If you have an infection, you will receive either antibiotics or anti-fungal medications depending on the offending organism. Commonly used medications for neutropenia-induced infection include Fortaz, Cipro, Amphocin, Fungizone and Ambisome.
Replenishing White Blood Cells

In more serious case, you might receive white blood cell growth factors like G-CSF or filgrastim. You might also receive a granulocyte (type of white blood cell) transfusion.
Immune-Mediated Neutropenia

In some cases, abnormal immune activity can lead to a low white cell count. In these instances, certain drugs like corticosteroids or IV therapy with immune globulin, which can protect the body from infection.
Other Considerations

Certain measures are necessary to reduce risk of infection and other complications. Carefully wash your hands and practice good oral hygiene. You might need to avoid fresh fruits and vegetables to reduce risk of infection from any bacteria or fungus present. Your doctor will advise you of any other measures.
