What Affects White Low Blood Count?

A low white blood cell count, or leukopenia,is a condition in which an abnormally low amount of white blood cells are circulating in a person’s blood. White blood cells fight diseases and infections in the body.
  1. Viral Infections

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, viral infections may reduce the ability of the bone marrow to produce white blood cells and cause low levels of white blood cells.

    Cancer

    • Leukemia or cancer of the bone marrow can cause the body to create fewer white blood cells.

    Autoimmune Disorders

    • Autoimmune disorders such as AIDS can cause the body to fight against its own white blood cells, reducing their number.

    Other Medical Conditions

    • Leukopenia can develop from allergies, hyperthyroidism or vitamin deficiencies. Patients with aplastic anemia may also experience low levels of white blood cells.

    Drug Causes

    • The use of drugs such as diuretics, antibiotics and prednisone may contribute to a reduced white blood cell count.
