Lovenox Injections & Pain

Lovenox is a drug that thins the blood to prevent new clots from forming. Unfortunately, it is administered at home by self-injection, which can be both physically and emotionally painful for some patients. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the pain (during and after the injection), so you can view your treatment as a health benefit rather than a burden.
  1. Before Injection

    • Because the prick of the needle can hurt, it is recommended that you ice the insertion area---usually a few inches to the side of the belly button---before administering the shot.

    Stinging Sensation

    • If you do not allow the disinfecting alcohol to thoroughly dry before inserting the needle, you may feel a sharp stinging sensation from the alcohol entering your skin.

    During Injection

    • Be aware that users will feel a mild burning sensation as the Lovenox enters the body and for a few minutes afterward. Although uncomfortable, this sensation is normal.

    After Injection

    • Side effects of Lovenox include bruising---especially if you have hit a muscle---and pain at the injection site.

    Other Pain

    • After the injection, if you feel increased pain in parts of your body other than the injection site (such as your chest or your leg), see your doctor immediately.
