How to Apply Compression Hose

Compression hose may be difficult to get on. They are meant to be tight. It is in being tight that you get the benefit of the improved circulation.

      Wash and dry the legs. Apply a little cornstarch to the leg. Never ever apply lanolin or any kind of lotion before applying the stockings.

      Turn the upper part of the compression hose inside out all the way to the heel. Gently slide the hose down over the foot.

      Slip your foot into the foot portion making sure to align the heel portion correctly over the heel. In some stockings, there is a hole to view the toes. Align the heel correctly and the hole will be aligned correctly also.

      Ease the stockings over the heel.

      Gently massage the stocking upwards toward the knee. Do not pull at the upper edge of the compression hose.

      Repeat the same process for the other leg. Make sure that the stitch rows run vertically and are not twisted around the leg. This completes application of compression hose that are thigh high.

      For pantyhose-style compression hose - very gently ease the body part of the hose up to your waist. Again, making sure the seams are running vertically and are not twisted.

      Look for twisting, bunching, or seams that are not vertical. These could create a tourniquet like effect. Straighten these areas immediately.
