What Is the Difference Between Lovenox & Heparin?

Lovenox (enoxaparin) and heparin are two drugs used to prevent blood clots. They are also known as anticoagulants or anti-platelets. Although both are used for preventative measures, they differ from one another considerably.

Actions

• Heparin prevents clots and also stops them from getting bigger. Lovenox does these things as well, with the added ability to break up clots that already exist.

Routes of Administration

• Lovenox is available both in vials for injection and as tablets. Heparin, by contrast, is only available by injection.

Heparin Side Effects

• The primary side effects associated with heparin are irritation, pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site.

Heparin Serious Side Effects

• Any signs of increased bruising, nose bleeds, bloody, tar-like stools, or blood in the urine while taking heparin are cause for alarm. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Lovenox Side Effects

• Commonly reported symptoms associated with lovenox include nausea, diarrhea, swelling, and unusual bleeding. Like heparin, it too can cause irritation at the injection site.

Lovenox Serious Side Effects

• If you experience continuous bleeding, severe bruising, weakness, headache, confusion and mental status changes, pain or swelling in the legs, coughing or chest pain and trouble breathing, seek medical help right away.
