What Does My Blood Pressure Reading Mean?

The heart pumps blood through your body, and as this blood moves it pushes against the blood vessels. This push is what is called blood pressure. Too high a blood pressure reading may lead to a heart attack or stroke.
  1. Blood Pressure Numbers

    • Blood pressure is measured with two numbers, which are written one over the other. The systolic (top) number reflects pressure as the heart contracts. The diastolic (bottom) number reflects pressure as the heart relaxes.

    Normal Numbers

    • The National Heart and Lung Blood Institute states a normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 mm Hg (which stands for "millimeters of mercury").

    High Blood Pressure Numbers

    • Patients with numbers higher than 120/80 are considered to have prehypertension, which makes the heart work harder. Patients with numbers higher than 140/90 are considered to have high blood pressure and are at risk for heart attack and stroke.

    Low Blood Pressure Numbers

    • The Mayo Clinic states low blood pressure (or hypotension) or numbers below 90/60 mm Hg indicate a very low blood pressure, which can cause dizziness and indicate there may be a problem getting oxygen to the vital organs.

    Treatments

    • The National Heart and Lung Blood Institute suggests medical attention for either too high or too low a blood pressure reading. Patients should eat healthy, keep their weight down and exercise regularly. Medication can also lower blood pressure.
