Diet for Hyperkalemia

Hyperkalemia is the term given to the condition of having too much potassium in the blood. Usually only a very small amount of the body's potassium is found in the bloodstream (about 2 percent), and an increase can be devastating. Potassium serves many important purposes within the body, but high levels can be life threatening and must be addressed quickly.
  1. Foods

    • The most obvious change to make in your diet for hyperkalemia is to avoid foods that are high in potassium. Bananas, tomatoes, peaches, potatoes, and watermelon contain high amounts of potassium and should be avoided. Other foods rich in potassium include lentils, nuts and salmon. All of these foods should be limited for individuals with hyperkalemia.

Avoid "junk food," including cookies, doughnuts, crackers, margarine, onion rings, French fries and cakes. Limit processed meats like lunch meats and fast food. Eat less red meat and focus instead on beans, cold-water fish, or white meat for your protein. Some healthcare providers test for food allergies, as eating foods you're allergy to can impact potassium levels. Cooking with healthier oils, like olive oil, is also advised for individuals with hyperkalemia.

    Other Tips

    • Healthcare providers tend to recommend avoiding alcohol and tobacco, as both stress the body and can affect the levels of potassium in the bloodstream. Many providers also recommend avoiding products that contain caffeine, such as soft drinks and tea.

Another important factor for the diet of someone with hyperkalemia is to take in enough water. Dehydration is known to make hyperkalemia worse.

    No Extremes

    • Keep in mind that even though you may need to cut back your potassium intake, it is still an important mineral for your body. Potassium is needed to balance the water and pH in your body, as well as for normal muscle growth and a healthy nervous system and brain function. Follow your physician's advice about how much potassium to consume each day.
