Side Effects of Lenalidomide

Lenalidomide is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of various bone marrow and blood disorders, such as multiple myeloma. It is used for people with insufficient red blood cells that are properly functioning. The drug is classified as an immunomodulator. There are some possible side effects that could occur as a result of taking Lenalidomide.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • There are some common and minor side effects of taking Lenalidomide. These side effects generally subside as the body gets used to the medicine. However, if you find that they are particularly troubling, you should consult your doctor. These side effects are appetite loss, increased sweating, night sweats, dry skin, dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, runny or stuffy nose, difficulty sleeping, headache, weakness, throwing up, diarrhea, constipation, coughing, backache and dizziness.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are a possibility with Lenalidomide use, and require emergency medical help. Some potentially dangerous Lenalidomide side effects include the legs or the arms swelling up or feeling tender, painful or numb; stomachache; abnormal bleeding or bruising; sore throat; fever; chills; joint or muscle pain; darker colored urine; chest ache; bloody vomit or stools; slow, irregular or rapid heartbeat; muscle cramps; difficult or painful urination; extreme exhaustion; and shortness of breath.

    Allergic Reactions

    • In certain situations, severe allergic reactions can also occur from taking Lenalidomide. These allergic reactions can be dangerous and require emergency medical assistance. Some signs of allergic reaction are chest tightness, breathing difficulties, swelling, itching, skin rash and hives.

    Warnings

    • Lenalidomide can result in life-threatening and serious side effects if a woman or man is taking the medication during conception or throughout pregnancy. It can even result in the death of the baby. Even small doses can have fatal consequences. Birth defects are also possible. Couples planning to get pregnant, and pregnant females, must avoid Lenalidomide use.

    Caution

    • You must inform your doctor of any medical conditions that you might have when you are considering using this medication, especially if you have or have had kidney disease, stroke or blood clotting disorders. These conditions could make it so that you need to have the dosage changed or specialized testing for safely taking Lenalidomide.
