How to Control Anemia

Anemia is caused when there are not enough red blood cells to carry sufficient amounts of oxygen throughout the body. It can also be caused by a drop in hemoglobin levels. Anemia slows down the processes that allow the body to function efficiently. This causes fatigue and compromises the immune system.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a complete checkup by your physician. A complete blood count (CBC) should be taken to determine what your red blood count is. This will also reveal your blood oxygen level.

    • 2

Eat organ meats to increase iron levels substantially. Iron deficiencies can be caused by lack of iron in the diet. Women who experience heavy menstrual periods are susceptible to this form of anemia. Blackstrap molasses is also a good source of iron. The herb, nettle (taken in capsule form), is rich in iron and vitamin C.

    • 3

Take folic acid and vitamin B-12. Both are essential for the production of red blood cells in the body. B-12 is important when it comes to the body's ability to breakdown protein to use as fuel.

    • 4

Take extra vitamin C. Not only will it help fight off infection; it's vital to the body's ability to absorb iron.

    • 5

Avoid sweets. High levels of sugar in the bloodstream decreases the body's ability to utilize iron.

    • 6

Don't take all of your supplements at once. Calcium and Vitamin E can reduce the amount of iron that the body absorbs. Take your multivitamin in the morning and your iron supplement at night. Never take a supplement with coffee or soda. The caffeine and acids they contain will neutralize the vitamins before they have a chance to be absorbed.

Get your thyroid checked. An underactive thyroid also can cause fatigue.
