What is the definition of impacted fracture?
Impacted fracture is a type of fracture in bone in which the fractured ends of the bone are driven tightly together. This type of fracture can be caused by great force and may be associated with a fracture dislocation or a broken bone penetrating through the skin. Symptoms of an impacted fracture may include but are not limited to pain, swelling, and bruising. In order to diagnose an impacted fracture, an x-ray is often utilized. Treatment of impacted fractures may include closed reduction, internal fixation, or surgical repair depending on the severity and complexity of the fracture.
