What is a navicular fracture?

A navicular fracture is a break in the navicular bone, which is located in the middle of the foot, just below the ankle joint. Navicular fractures are relatively rare, accounting for only about 2-3% of all foot fractures. They are most commonly caused by high-energy injuries, such as falls from a height or motor vehicle accidents.

Navicular fractures can be difficult to diagnose, as they can sometimes be mistaken for other foot injuries. Symptoms of a navicular fracture may include:

* Pain and swelling in the middle of the foot

* Bruising

* Difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected foot

* Tenderness to the touch

If you think you may have a navicular fracture, it is important to see a doctor right away. Treatment for a navicular fracture typically involves immobilization with a cast or boot, followed by physical therapy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.

Navicular fractures can take a long time to heal, but most people eventually make a full recovery.
