I broke my 5th metcarpal on right hand 5 weeks ago. Received surgery where they put a plate in hand. Hand still swells up and painful. Is this normal?
After the surgery, your hand may be swollen due to inflammation, bruising, and fluid accumulation. This is usually managed by your doctor with elevation, compression, and use of ice packs.
Pain is also common after surgery, especially during the early stages of healing. To control this, your doctor may prescribe pain medication or suggest over-the-counter pain relievers. It's important to take medication as directed and avoid activities that may cause unnecessary pain or discomfort.
In your case, it is 5 weeks after the surgery, and it is understandable to still be experiencing swelling and discomfort. However, if you have any concerns or if the swelling and pain seem excessive or worsening, it is important to follow up with your doctor or hand surgeon for reassessment and further guidance on the healing process.
