How to Walk Up Stairs With Crutches

Whether you have broken or sprained any part of your leg, you will probably need to use crutches at some point in order to get yourself from place to place. Walking with crutches is difficult enough on flat ground, but when you reach stairs the difficulty is increased greatly. With a little bit of practice, there is a simple way you can go up any flight of stairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in front of the stairs. Your feet and crutches should be as close to the bottom step as possible.

    • 2

Raise your injured leg behind you slightly and transfer all your weight to your crutches.

    • 3

Lift your good foot and set it on the first step. Shift all your weight back onto your good foot once it is firmly set down.

    • 4

Move your crutches to rest on the next step up. Relax and steady yourself once you have gone up one step.

    • 5

Walk up the rest of the stairs in the same way as slowly as you need to until you reach the top.
