How to Tape a Broken Index Finger

The typical procedure for taping a broken index finger also involves a finger splint, to keep the finger immobilized in a straight line in order to help the bone set properly. You can splint and tape your index finger on your own temporarily until you can seek medical attention, but you should always seek medical attention when you break any bone.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the splint onto your finger. The splint may be straight, which is placed along-side the finger, or a finger-tip splint which is shaped somewhat like a 'V" and is placed over the top of your finger.

    • 2

Wrap medical tape around the finger and the splint. Start at the top of the finger and wrap down to the knuckle.

    • 3

Place another piece of tape at the bottom of the finger, starting near the knuckle nearest the hand, then wrap up to the tip.

    • 4

Place additional tape rotating starting positions until your finger cannot move or wiggle. Ensure that the tape isn't restricting blood flow in your finger.
