How to Remove an External Fixator
An external fixator is a device used to hold a fractured bone in place during the healing process. The fixator comprises multiple rings and pins that are inserted into the bone. External fixators are used for complex fractures, most commonly fractured tibia or injuries where external wounds are present. To avoid further injury or infection, external fixators should only be removed by a doctor who specializes in bone fractures.Things You'll Need
- Disinfectant
- Bone drill

1
Physically examine the broken tibia. Confirm the bone is healing correctly and is strong enough to remove the external fixator.
-
2
Make sure the skin around the external fixator is cleaned with disinfectant. A scab may have developed around the pins, which may cause some friction.
-
3
Unscrew the bolts at the end of each pin. Keep the bone stable during this process.
-
4
When the external fixator is used on the tibia, there may be small strings on the end of the pins. Do not pull these. These must be removed with a bone drill, which is a tool with a small handle to turn the pins.
-
5
If no strings are in place, slowly pull out the pins one at a time. It's important to keep the external fixator even--pull one pin out of the left side, then one out of the right side. Continue this pattern until all of the pins are out.
