What is the Limbic System?

- Limbic System: A set of neural structures in the forebrain (ventral part of the cerebral cortex) is known as the 'limbic system'. 

- It deals with a variety of activities: including Emotion, Behavior, Motivation, and Long-Term Memory.

Components of the Limbic System: 

1. Hippocampus

2. Amygdala

3. Thalamus

4. Hypothalamus

5. Olfactory Cortex: Part of cerebral cortex receiving input by Olfactory system

- Functions of the Limbic System:

Learning  and memory - hippocampus

      Emotional processing - amygdala; especially fear and aggressiveness responses.  

Hormone Regulation*

Internal Organ Function - heart-rate control, temperature control etc

     **Sleep Cycles

Hunger, thirst and reproduction control.**
